Fantasy Sports King Introduces Casino Gambling
December 21, 2018
With all federal bans against sports betting and online gambling lifted in America, some states are moving quickly to take advantage of every available opportunity.
For years, DraftKings has held its spot as the top daily fantasy sports operator in the world. The company made its bones by allowing American residents to play fantasy baseball, football and basketball in tournament and head-to-head formats on a daily basis.
Forever being the consummate opportunist, DraftKings has quickly been adding components on the way to becoming one of the leading online gambling operation in the country. With online fantasy sports are ready locked in, the company waited patiently for the US Supreme Court to lift the federal ban on sports betting. For what it's worth, fantasy sports betting was exempt from the federal sports gambling ban because it was classified as a game of skill, not chance.
All of that would seem to be moot at this point. In May, the US Supreme Court did rule the sports betting ban was unconstitutional, remanding the legalization of it to the state level. New Jersey was one of the first states to legalize both online sports betting and casino gambling. Waiting in the wings, DraftKings jumped at the opportunity to start offering sports betting through its online platform. The move made perfect sense given the close relationship between playing fantasy sports for money and betting on sports events.
Now, news comes that DraftKings is ready to take the next step by offering online casino gambling. As of December 18, 2018, the DraftKings online casino operation has been integrated into its sports betting platform. The first online casino game available is Blackjack, which is now fully operational.
The move into the online casino space has put DraftKings into direct competition with a number of Casino operation powerhouses. Currently, The Golden Nugget continues to lead the New Jersey online casino market with as much as $9 million a month in gaming revenues. Borgota is a distant second. Can DraftKings compete at that level? Given the popularity of daily fantasy sports, it would be a mistake to not recognize DraftKings as a big player in any market.
All eyes will now be turning to DraftKings' top fantasy sports competitor FanDuel, a company that is now part of Paddy Power Betfair conglomerate. In Europe, Paddy Power is a big player in the online gambling market. With access to a lot of online gambling resources, it would seem to be just a matter of time before FanDuel joins in the fray.
